7:05p In the event of my premature death, bury me in a vat of whiskey praline pecans.
My stepmother brought me a cooler full of gourmet store goodies, including saffron, amaretto–dark chocolate cordials, lemon curd, and the aforementioned pecans, as a graduation present. Everything in it is fucking delicious, and as there's a ton of other delectables still in my apartment, I bought a resistance band today at the Sports Authority. I should learn to use it.
So my family was here for an exhausting five days. We had some great food and went to Top of the Rock, and I graduated in a purple gown, twice. I had a lot of fun at the cookout on Sunday (we really need to turn Olivia into the world's first 10-month-old human Roomba) but now I'd like to sleep for about two days. Sadly, I am also not remotely ready for the NYPD 5K on Sunday, so I expect to turn in a really crap time. I am glad Kate will be there as well; if anyone wants to join us for brunch, let me know.
Pictures of the above are on the MyFace. I have to start looking for a real job now. Not now, like, Thursday at 7:30, but now like now that school isn't an excuse anymore. Anyone want to hire an often irascible but hardworking and detail-oriented junior editor?
ETA: Oh! Also, I need new headphones. I like earbuds, but I don't want to buy another pair of the Apple ones because they're expensive and the sound quality degrades, like, immediately. Any suggestions?

11:31a The Best Place to Be
I just finished Lesley Dormen's gem of a novel-in-stories, The Best Place to Be. I first read Dormen's work in the December 2001 Atlantic Monthly (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200112/dormen), as assigned by my wonderful writing teacher at the time, Greg Lichtenberg. [side note: If I could afford it, I would pay that man just to talk to me about fiction. If anyone gets a chance to take any kind of class with him anywhere, do it.] The story was "The Old Economy Husband," and while some of my classmates worried it was too bourgeois, I was utterly smitten by its style, voice, and narrator.
My favorite writers give me words to describe an emotion I recognize immediately but, until that moment, was unable to articulate. Dormen's prose gives this gift again and again.
The Best Place to Be opens with "The Old Economy Husband;" the stories that follow afford additional glimpses into first-person narrator Grace's life, from age 15-50. Dormen makes old-hat short story themes (the loss of a parent, the plight of a single woman among married friends) seem new again. And Grace's relationships with her brother, Alex; her best friend, Phoebe; and the changing landscape of Manhattan are vividly realized, each love obsessive in its own way. The order of events is not chronological, but it is purposeful. I've recently talked with several writer-friends about the pitfalls and pleasures of successfully bending narrative time, focusing on the "how and why" rather than the "what."
While The Best Place to Be explores such hows and whys (and unravels layers of who) with gusto, I can't help but wish the book were longer, more fleshed out. Each story, by itself, feels finished, but the book as a whole does not. At the end, I felt I had read a series of perfectly realized scenes excerpted from a larger novel.
I still highly recommend it -- especially for JFA.

1:55p Holy @#*%& crap!
California's Supreme Court just ruled that the state's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional!
"Furthermore, in contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual’s sexual orientation - like a person’s race or gender - does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights. We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples."

8:59a Much love
Big thank you to all those who attended The Spin last night! I know I saw maggith, wmetoile, petit_chou, shinyredtype and others without LJs, but even if I neglected to mention you, thank you for coming. We were proud of our set, and adjoining act I Eat Pandas once again proved why they are so popular. Those gals is amazing.
I finally have the info for my two-man show, Bent/Lind, which will be enjoying its official debut tonight at the New Acting Company Theater by NYU. It's at 219 Sullivan Street, starting at 8 pm, and it is completely FREE. We're only on for ten minutes, but think about it if you're not busy tonight.
I wanna see Son of Rambow and The Fall at some point in the near future. Anyone else?

10:37p play game, buy book
If you're a Chuck Palahniuk fan [or have never read him but, like me, loved the movie Fight Club] and want to check out Rant...or if you just relish crashing cars in a virtual setting, go here: http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/rant/
I started wondering if there were other promotional video games out there...I mean, it seems like a great idea. But my lame attempts at google searches yielded crap.
video game book led to rhapsodical rumors about Ender's Game the, er, game. And an educational game about Lord of the Flies.
game publicity novel revealed that far too many people have used the following construction: "the publicity game"
"video game" novel promotion led to two games by a self-published novelist, and maybe they're great, but they took too damn long to load.
viral video game novel yielded a dozen angry articles about why promotional video games don't work.
And here I thought this was going to be a fun, fun post full of linkage to awesome fiction interactivity.

4:56p My mom wants me to review porn.
My mom sent me a link to this craigslist posting. I called her and asked, "Did you read the first sentence?"
"Oh, is it porn?" she asked.
"Um... yeah, it says, 'Are you an adult film fan?'"
She said, "Oh, I thought that meant, like, not children's movies."

12:52p Kudos to Marc Fitten
Marc Fitten edits the Chattahoochee Review (where my story "Recognition" will be published this spring), and he recently sold his first novel, _Valeria's Last Stand_, in what publishing folk call a "major deal." The book is slated to lead Bloomsbury USA's Spring '09 list.
On Publishers Lunch, the book is described as "a modern-day fable featuring a terminally cranky old spinster who finds equal fault with the new, the old, the foreign and the familiar in her backwater Hungarian village, but suddenly falls in love with the long-known but little-noticed village potter, and with this one deviation from character, the delicately woven fabric of village life begins to unravel."
[I'd like to take a moment and point out this example of excellent copy: enticing and playful, yet clean. In one breath, it makes me care enough about the story to wonder - genuinely - just what will unravel. Good work, copy writer.]
Big congratulations to Marc; can't wait to read this.

11:46a MCR at MSG, etc.
Last Friday, I left work early to go to New York to see My Chemical Romance because I'm all emo like that. The Greyhound Bus was not actually a Greyhound; it was much nicer! But the traffic was, of course, bad since it was a rainy Friday. I successfully met up with sparklyfabulous at Port Authority after a hilarious phone conversation: "I'm in front of a Hudson News." "Wait, I'm in front of a Hudson News, too!" "Maybe you are on the other side..." [*Screaming*] Then we went down to Chelsea to have dinner at Vinyl with slightlyoffaxis, rockmarooned, and Spencer. They had giant mosaics of rock stars in the bathrooms. I washed my hands in the Boy George one, and Michelle and I took photos in the Justin Timberlake one. I ate a turkey burger and drank a Purple Rain. Mmmmm....
Then we walked over to the cupcake cafe where I ate a beautiful and delicious cupcake and saw an apostrophe catastrophe.
After that, Michelle and I went up to Madison Square Garden. It was kind of ghetto! Also, the sound in MSG isn't that great, but it was still a great show because MCR rocks! We went straight to Brooklyn and went to sleep since we had to wake up relatively early to go meet Mar for brunch. More delicious food at Friend of a Farmer. Mmmm.... Michelle's neighborhood is really cute!!!
On my way up to Port Authority, I stopped at the best store ever, Steve and Barry's. There are a couple in MA but none near me. Everything costs $8.89!!! Bargains!!
The bus ride home sucked because I was sitting next to this overweight woman who kept invading my personal space. After a while, literally half of my ass was off the seat because she kept shoving me into the aisle. Suckage!
On Sunday, I had to volunteer at Mayfair for Amnesty. It was nice in the morning, but it got freezing later in the day. My family came by and we walked around the festival for a bit, and afterwards I went over to their house and ate baby back ribs. Mmmm....
